My Story
After immigrating to Edmonton, Alberta in 2006, I walked the tightrope between my Indian and Canadian identities using poetry and prose as her balancing bar. Rather than contain my written words in the margins of notebooks and the pages of journals, I started this website as a way to share my written work with my friends and family. As nerve-wracking as it is at times, my sincere hope is that my writing evokes the right emotions to disrupt the structures of domination and create change in this corner of the world.
A lot of my writing stems from the foundation built by my BA in Sociology and BA Hons. in Women and Gender Studies. I write about my experiences not only because of that foundation, but also because I have been that twelve year old in a brand new country, wondering if there was anyone else out there who had been through what I was going through; who was going through what I was going through. I believe that there is a lack of visible mentors, representation, and sharing of stories that help immigrant girls realize that they’re not alone in their struggle. Moreover, regardless of the background of the reader, I genuinely believe that we can learn, benefit, and grow from the experiences shared within these digital pages.
